Amendments to By-law 3 approved
Convocation today approved amendments to By-Law 3 [Benchers, Convocation and Committees], regarding a single date for the lawyer and paralegal Bencher election, as well as details on the term limit for paralegal Benchers.
Presented by the Governance Task Force, the amendments incorporate the scope of the 12-year term limit for paralegal Benchers. As a result, all service as a member of the Paralegal Standing Committee and as a Bencher — either appointed or elected — will count towards the 12-year bencher term limit.
The amendments also remove the provisions that dealt with the election of five paralegals to the Paralegal Standing Committee (PSC) and the subsequent election by the PSC of two paralegal committee members to Convocation, as the Law Society Act was previously amended to provide that all five paralegals are elected directly to Convocation.
As well, the election of the chair of the Paralegal Standing Committee has been moved from the April meeting of the Paralegal Standing Committee to its September meeting, with provisions to cover the leadership of the committee in the interim period following the Bencher election, if required.
