The Honourable Annemarie E. Bonkalo, Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice, received an  honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD), from the Law Society at the Call to the Bar ceremony in Toronto on June 21.

She was honoured for her outstanding service to the profession and the judiciary — in particular, her sound judgment and understanding of law and the justice system.

Chief Justice Bonkalo is the first woman appointed as Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice (2007), the largest trial court in Canada, with 284 judges and 345 justices of the peace.

The Law Society also welcomed 370 newly minted lawyers to the Bar of Ontario at the June 21st morning Call ceremony. More than 1,450 new lawyers are being called at the five Call to the Bar ceremonies held throughout Ontario in June.
