Important notice to licensees: administrative fees increase, starting January 1, 2018

Posted: 12/27/2017

To ensure better compliance with payment and filing deadlines, Convocation approved an increase to administrative fees – effective January 1, 2018.

What does this mean for you?

If you are late completing or reporting your 2017 CPD Hours, or filing your Annual Report, you will be subject to a fee of $200 for late compliance for each obligation. Late payment of the annual fee will result in a $150 late payment fee. If you are administratively suspended for failing to pay Law Society licence fees, the reinstatement fee is $300, plus applicable taxes. Please find a complete list of administrative fee changes below.

Please note that the Law Society is no longer making calls to remind licensees about administrative obligations. Emails and Portal reminders/notices will be used to inform members of any defaults and associated actions.

Fee changes effective January 1, 2018:

  • Late payment fee – $150 (increase of $50)
  • Late compliance fee for CPD – $200 (increase of $100)
  • Late filing fee for annual report – $200 (increase of $100)
  • Reinstatement fee – $300 plus applicable taxes (increase of $150)
  • Returned cheque fee – $50 (increase of $25)

Administrative fees were introduced by the Law Society to encourage compliance with payment and filing deadlines and to cover some of the administrative fee-related costs.

Make the Portal your first Port-of-Call

To stay on top of payments and deadlines, lawyers and paralegals are encouraged to check the Law Society Portal regularly for any notices and information about upcoming deadlines. Information is also available by visiting the Lawyer Important Dates or Paralegal Important Dates pages on

We have been focusing on making the online Portal even more user-friendly. The Portal allows you to track important dates and register for yearly pre-authorized payment for your fees – which provides a $50 discount on your fees every year that the pre-authorized payment plan is in effect.
