Malcolm M. Mercer, Law Society Treasurer
Malcolm M. Mercer was elected on June 28, 2018, as the Treasurer (President) of the Law Society of Ontario – the governing body of Ontario’s 52,000 lawyers and more than 8,600 licensed paralegals.
First elected as a Bencher in 2011, he was re-elected in 2015 and has chaired the Law Society’s Advertising and Fee Arrangements Issues Working Group and served as Vice-Chair for the Professional Regulation Committee and the Alternative Business Structures Working Group.
He also served on the Access to Justice Committee, Paralegal Standing Committee, Priority Planning Committee, and Summary Disposition Committee, as well as the Compliance-Based Entity Regulation Task Force, the Real Estate Working Group and the Challenges Faced by Racialized Licensees Working Group.
As a bencher and as a lawyer, Treasurer Mercer has committed himself to issues of legal ethics and has been deeply involved in the development of the Law Society’s Rules of Professional Conduct and effective professional regulation. He has also been an active member of the Law Society Tribunal.
In 2013, he was recognized by the Canadian Bar Association with the prestigious Louis St. Laurent award. He is a director of Pro Bono Law Ontario and the Victorian Order of Nurses Canada. In 2014, he was voted one of the Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers
He received his B.Sc., in systems design and engineering in 1977 and his LLB from the University of Toronto in 1982. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1984.
A partner with McCarthy Tétrault’s Litigation Group, the new Treasurer has been practising for 30 years and currently focuses on commercial and corporate matters and professional negligence. He also acts as the firm’s General Counsel and is the former co-leader of its National Litigation Practice.
