National AccessAbility Week

Posted: 06/02/2020

National Accessability WeekMay 31-June 6, 2020 is National AccessAbility Week. The occasion, first celebrated in 2017, is enshrined in government legislation, the Accessible Canada Act, which came into effect in 2019. According to the Act, National AccessAbility Week commences on the last Sunday in May, as part of an effort to celebrate Canadians with disabilities and highlight and promote inclusion and accessibility in workplaces and communities across the country. The relatively new legislation creates a framework for inclusive environments and applies nation-wide to the federally regulated industries and the wider public sector.

The Law Society of Ontario and ARCH Disability Law Centre have partnered over many years to present a program in honour of National AccessAbility Week and Access Awareness Week, as the occasion was previously known. The Law Society of Ontario is grateful for this partnership with ARCH Disability Law Centre and for the leadership it has demonstrated in raising awareness and advancing issues and causes relevant to legal professionals with disabilities, not just during this week but all year around. Although we had to cancel our joint event to mark this occasion due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important that we celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments and contributions of lawyers and paralegals with visible and invisible disabilities to the legal community in Ontario.

Last year’s joint National AccessAbility Week focused on accessibility at administrative tribunals. For those who wish to view last year’s program, you may do so at the following link: https://lso.freestonelms.com/viewer/daZTRe44gTJnF47tWHrgDJHw1RJX1kV7JfyXnTHZoKoFi

Please note that this program has been accredited for 1 hour and 45 minutes of EDI Professionalism Content.

Our society is at its best when legal professionals with disabilities are supported and when we’ve removed barriers and created environments where everyone can be independent and participate equally in their communities and workplaces.

Happy National AccessAbility Week to all our licensees!
