A new approach to better justice
On Nov. 18, the Ministry of the Attorney General and TAG – The Action Group on Access to Justice, co-hosted the Better Justice Together Symposium, a groundbreaking collaborative event focused on access to justice.
Chief Justice George Strathy launched the symposium with inspiring remarks and a call for the justice sector to work more closely together on access to justice solutions. “If we coordinate our efforts, we can make great strides,” Chief Justice Strathy said.
Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur provided the keynote address, unveiling her vision for a future state. In her remarks, the Attorney General listed the four main areas of initial focus:
- “We will modernize ministry processes and technologies to make our services more efficient, and improve the flow of information between all justice partners.
- “In the realm of family justice, we will improve outcomes for families by diverting appropriate cases out of court, and offering a broader range of supportive services and information.
- “We will continue to modernize and streamline our court processes to improve access to justice, and improve efficiency to better serve our customers.
- “And we will work with our justice and community partners to better support individuals with mental health issues who come into contact with the justice system, including at the bail and sentencing stages.”
Law Society Treasurer Janet Minor opened the afternoon portion of the symposium on behalf of TAG, commending the Attorney General for her commitment to improving access to justice and providing attendees with an overview of TAG.
“TAG is a community of organizations and individuals committed to working collaboratively to find new solutions to access to justice challenges in Ontario,” said Treasurer Minor.
Treasurer Minor went on discuss the current work of TAG. “Despite TAG’s evolutionary status, there has been a good deal of activity to date,” said the Treasurer.
Attendees then broke into smaller groups to provide feedback on the Ministry of the Attorney General’s strategy.
