At a special ceremony commemorating the centenary of the onset of the First World War, the Law Society held an honorary Call to the Bar on Nov. 10.

Fifty-nine soldiers who aspired to join the legal profession but died before becoming a lawyer were Called in a moving tribute. Photos from the event are displayed below.

The event doubled as a book launch for Patrick Shea’s collection of biographies of the soldiers, They Shall Grow Not Old. Shea, a partner at Gowlings, has published the book online for free viewing.

Then on Remembrance Day, the Law Society tweeted the names of each soldier in an online tribute.
