Now available: quick reference tool for new conduct rules
On Oct. 1, amendments to the Rules of Professional Conduct and the Paralegal Rules of Conduct come into effect.
A quick reference tool and other step-by-step resources, developed by the Law Society, will assist lawyers and paralegals with understanding and complying with the amended rules.
While most rules changes are minor, some introduce new standards, particularly those dealing with conflicts of interest, undertakings and withdrawal from representation.
The definition of client was also amended. The rule amendments are based on the Federation of Law Societies of Canada’s Model Code of Professional Conduct.
Law societies across Canada are adopting the Model Code to establish uniform professional conduct standards in an environment of increased lawyer mobility and to promote public confidence in a self-regulated profession with a national set of common standards for professionalism and ethical behaviour.
The paralegal rules and guidelines were amended to maintain consistency with the lawyer rules.
See the new rules of conduct webpage for a full list of resources and additional background information.
